This is the list of 10 books for kids that encourage children to start to read by themselves, with simple words and illustrations that give clues to their meaning.

Basically, the book consists of short sentences (two to three words each), and therefore in my list it takes first place as the easiest to read. This is a must for every bookshelf and a time-honored gift for baby showers and other special events.

“The Very Hungry Caterpillar” tells about a caterpillar that swallows more and more food during the week. At the beginning of the book a small caterpillar crawls out of an egg and begins to search for food, which continues to be done every day.

At first, the caterpillar eats only wholesome food – for example, fruits and vegetables. Then she switches to junk food, and as a result, her stomach begins to ache . Because of this she decides to eat something healthy again and she feels better. In the end, the caterpillar pupates and soon becomes a butterfly.

This children’s book is good for learning basic English words such as numbers, food names, and days of the week. As mentioned above, repetition is very important for improving language skills, and this book has many great repetitive phrases.

The monkey creates a bunch of problems there. George calls the ffirefighters, finds himself in a prison, escapes from it, flies into the sky on balloons and finally returns safe and sound to the zoo.

The book uses many short simple sentences, so it will be easy for children to read it. For example: “One day George saw a man. He had on a large yellow straw hat. The man saw George too ”. As you can see, the proposals are very short, so “Curious George” will be an excellent choice for kids 4-7 years old.

Monsters begin to fear him and proclaim him the main monster. In the end, Max says that he should go home and returns to the room on his boat. Once at home, he discovers that his mother left a hot dinner for him.

This is one of the most classic and famous children’s books in English literature and is definetely one of the 10 books for kids to read. This iconic story has inspired a movie and an opera. Although the book “Where the Wild Things Are” is written for children, it uses rather complicated vocabulary, so it is well suited for learning words and grammar of a higher level.

All the previous books in my list were written in poetic form, while this one is written using narrative language. Also this book has a clear plot with an ending. Such books are good for kids to learn how to read, because they are interesting and kids will find both simple words/grammar and complicated grammar constructions.

This is a book about a cat named Sam, who loves green eggs and ham. He wants his friend to try it too, but the friend does not want to eat that.

This story is written in the form of a long and cheerful poem; it uses repetition, as in “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”.
